People on campus (M7) have made fun of me for growing up in the suburbs and having tastes reflecting that

East Asian here who grew up in an East Asian metropolis and now living in NYC. I've also lived in a few suburbs between 14 and 23, so I can see where you're coming from. I can also see where they're coming from. Assuming you're in your late twenties, I can see why your classmates judge you, bc even though it's not your fault that only had access to suburban things until college, it is 100% your fault for not prioritizing the expansion of your horizon after college. Food is the easiest way to expand your horizon, and the fact that you barely tried to learn through food between the years you graduated and M7 tells me everything I need to know about you - don't get me wrong, you're probably a great guy, but you're either not very curious or open-minded, and that's not a lot of M7 folks' vibes (I'm friends with a few). This is clearly compounded by the fact that you're East Asian - did you not travel to your parents' country at least a few times and have a few bomb dishes/drinks from your culture that you can share?

I mentioned in my post, but my college was also in a very suburban area. The social activities still revolved around typical suburb things like chain restaurants. My work post-undergrad was also in a heavily suburban area. It was not until my M7 that I lived in a truly urban environment for the first time. Sure I visited NYC or LA for work here and there or occasionally with friends for bars & clubbing, but not that much.

I would think that most people grow up in suburbs and have just quickly adapted to cities, few people grow up directly in cities. You could just tell people that you're not much of a foodie. People are laughing because it's easy to make the food at these restaurants at home, and also easy to make it taste better and healthier, and you're claiming it's the best. Also, it's a little funny to hear an East Asian person prefer P.F. Changs over any other east Asian options.
