In 1972, kidnappers of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III, grandson of oil magnate J. Paul Getty, escalated their demands by mailing his severed ear to a Roman newspaper. The oil tycoon famously refused to pay ransom, stating, “If I pay now, I’ll have 14 kidnapped grandchildren.”
