I think the creators romanticized and normalized Emma’s unreciprocated effort she put into the relationship. To me, it’s anti-feminist when a woman is not only expected to but told she’ll be happy if she does all the work. When they visit Greece, she has rules and appears constantly uneasy trying to maintain their valued friendship while Dex does and says whatever he wants. He didn’t seem to care for her friendship. Regardless of gender, I think it’s unhealthy to romanticize repeated self-sacrifice to help someone who self-sabotages. I think romantic love is very powerful but shouldn’t be the reason people neglect their own needs and peace. I would have enjoyed seeing Emma express her feelings once or twice to Dex then once he friend-zoned her, she could relax and find meaning and self-worth outside of their relationship. Then maybe in a decade or two they meet up after working on themselves and have a healthy, romantic love. Just looking at Emma’s face the entire show, I think it’s cruel she was expected to carry the pain of their situationship alone for so long.
