Buying off roster guns before moving to CA

Soon-to-be CA resident here. I’ve been considering owning a gun for a long time since I do a lot of dispersed camping and safety has always been a concern. I’ve taken gun training courses and tried out a few different handguns at shooting ranges before making a decision to purchase my first gun.

I’ve heard about the very stringent firearm regulations in CA and I understand that some popular guns are on the off-roster list. I was thinking about getting a Glock 19 Gen 5, but recently I got a job offer and I will be relocating to California in February. I know buying a Glock 19 Gen 5 in California isn’t an option but I can buy it in my current state and bring it with me when I move. I understand I won’t be able to sell it in California, but like my first credit card, I’ll probably keep it forever.

I just wanted to get some advice before making a decision. Would you recommend buying an off-roster gun before moving to California? If not, what would be the reasons?
