Never played WOW, but I want to start

I have never played this game before. I saw some videos in my feed recently and I want to give it a try. However if I'm searching some very basic stuff I will be "planted" in a story that has been going on for many expansions/years?

Is there a way to play the game chronological and with the same character or is that not possible/worth it?
