I get to design my new job title…any advice?

I have a new job opportunity coming for state government. I’m currently working elsewhere in state govt as a high level IC but my current boss is toxic so I’m trying to leave. The new gig is a GIS job, which is the type of technical work I’ve spent the past 12 years after grad school doing professionally.

The person who would be my future boss is a former colleague who, with the help of his boss, is going hard to hire me. They’ve sweetened the pot twice now, and they asked me what I want my title and job to be. Technically I’ll have a state classified position but internally and in terms of job duties, I can essentially design the job, they just want me on the team in whatever way makes me happy. My actual goal is to move from high level IC to technical manager, to people manager. I want to run a GIS shop, generally speaking. I think my skills are quite well rounded at this point.

Thing is, he mentioned calling it a visual language expert, because he thinks I’m great at cartography (I really am). But partly I feel quietly offended, because I’m also great at data science, spatial analysis, research, etc. it almost feels like I’m getting this job for my looks rather than scientific skills.

Maybe I’m reading into it too much? Just trying to figure out how to steer this amazing opportunity to not feel shallow to me. Any suggestions?
