Safety

For context I am looking at UC starting fall semester and i visited a few weeks ago. I really loved the campus but i am absolutely freaked out by the city. Now i live in the middle of cornfields in a small town and have never been to a large city other then chicago so it might just be a me thing. So be honest,how safe do you feel on campus? Is the surrounding area sketchy? Anything else to ease my mind would be great but be honest! I'd really love to go there but i cannot be fearing for my life all the time
