how i interpreted backslide

to me personally, this song felt really religious. especially the chorus, it feels like he’s telling God that he’s sinking in depression/sin, and asking God if He should just let him go since he’s so far gone anyways. what do you think the meaning of the song is? i’d love to hear everyone else’s interpretation!!!
