Please critique my first time European itinerary

My wife and I will be traveling from the US to Europe for the first time. We will have 14-16 nights, with the trip going from late May through early June in 2024. We hve never been to Europe, so I'm somewhat guessing at what we will enjoy the most. But some important things for us are:

  • Good food and drinks
  • Enjoying the sights - Walking around, sitting outside having drinks and bites to it
  • Art - Both museums and generally artsy areas
  • Outdoors - My wife loves being near the ocean, we both enjoy hiking

Our happiest vacations have generally been arranged around having one or two definite things to do during the day, and then seeing what happens from there (ex: first we will go to <some place>, and then we will walk around and see what seems interesting nearby).

After taking a first pass at an itinerary, and then cutting about half of it off, I think the following seems reasonable. Right now I'm assuming 16 nights, though that might drop to 14 nights depending on how long I can convince the grandparents to watch the kiddos.

Spain --> Italy

  • Airplane from USA to Madrid
  • Madrid: 3 nights
    • Train to Barcelona
  • Barcelona: 2 nights
    • Airplane to Venice
  • Venice: 2 nights
    • Train to Florence
  • Florence: 2 nights
    • Train to Cinque Terre
  • Cinque Terra (not sure where yet): 3 nights
    • Train to Rome
  • Rome: 4 nights
    • Fly home from Rome

I know every trip is specific to the individuals taking the trip, but any recommendations based on this possible plan?
