Congestion charging fee amount

I’ve posted before on the deeply unpopular topic of introducing a congestion charge in Toronto. Yes, minimizing the use of cars is the only solution to a fixed capacity road network amidst a growing population and more urban development. This day will come.

Rather than debating this topic, I instead want to poll how much the toll should be to effectively discourage you from driving, in today’s money.

As a reminder, a congestion charge is a tax to disincentivize car use for a specific area. It would be billed daily let’s assume 24hrs a day M-F with some free use hours on Weekends which will eventually be enforced too.

In the case of Toronto let’s call that the area encased by the DVP, Gardiner, Bloor and Barthurst. Give or take. Crossing this boundary in every 24 hour period will result in a charge.

How much would that charge need to be for you in order to avoid crossing that boundary?

This applies to all vehicles other than those for disabled people with legitimate mobility issues.

Edit: if you live in this boundary, and your vehicle is registered to such an address, you will still be charged but will receive a 90% discount (as is in London).
