Do the nano fibers do anything in the books?

Obviously they helped get the data from the ship in the show but what else do they ultimately do?

I ask because it seemed like the San Ti really wanted Auggie to stop the production of them. All that effort, I can’t help but wonder if her invention accomplishes more in the books?
