What's the rules on alias changing

I'm trying to write stories for DC, Marvel, ect and I see quite a few hero/villain names that just feel so unoriginal or crappy. I'm not trying to sound arrogant in that I know when a name is good or bad, I just think sometimes it could be better. I spent hours upon hours researching the characters for why they chose they're respective names, looking through every discussion thread relating to the topic and even then I knew they weren't all good which is why I asked for feedback in the comments. I got mixed reviews to say the least, and I don't want a repeat when I actually do post a story for any given superhero verse with names I changed so are there any rules, or guidelines I have to follow so that I don't turn people against me?
