The Daily Check-In for Friday, January 14th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking!
We may be anonymous strangers on the internet, but we have one thing in common. We may be a world apart, but we're here together!
Welcome to the 24 hour pledge!
I'm pledging myself to not drinking today, and invite you to do the same.
Maybe you're new to /r/stopdrinking and have a hard time deciding what to do next. Maybe you're like me and feel you need a daily commitment or maybe you've been sober for a long time and want to inspire others.
It doesn't matter if you're still hung over from a three day bender or been sober for years, if you just woke up or have already completed a sober day. For the next 24 hours, lets not drink alcohol!
---
This pledge is a statement of intent. Today we don't set out *trying* not to drink, we make a conscious decision *not to drink*. It sounds simple, but all of us know it can be hard and sometimes impossible. The group can support and inspire us, yet only one person can decide if we drink today. Give that person the right mindset!
What happens if we can't keep to our pledge? We give up or try again. And since we're here in /r/stopdrinking, we're not ready to give up.
What this is: A simple thread where we commit to not drinking alcohol for the next 24 hours, posting to show others that they're not alone and making a pledge to ourselves. Anybody can join and participate at any time, you do not have to be a regular at /r/stopdrinking or have followed the pledges from the beginning.
What this isn't: A good place for a detailed introduction of yourself, directly seek advice or share lengthy stories. You'll get a more personal response in your own thread.

GRATITUDE (noun): the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.
For me, part of my journey in sobriety is all about being thankful for what I have. Lately it’s been the realization that I am safe and secure with a roof over my head, money to pay the bills, food in my fridge, animals I adore, and friends and family I never want to live without. Back when I was drinking, I never showed gratitude for any of these things. Money went towards wine, food was to absorb the alcohol after a binge, my dog was a pain in the ass because I’d have to walk her (but didn’t she know I was hungover and barely able to move?) Plans with friends and family were easily and often cancelled because “I didn’t feel well”. I shudder when I think of how selfish and unhealthy I was just a little over a year ago.
When you show gratitude on a daily basis, even for the most tiny or mundane things, everything changes -- your mood, your perspective, your outlook -- for when you show gratitude, you see a light that you might not have seen otherwise. So I ask each of you: Please share just one thing you’re thankful for today, this minute…and carry it with you all day. If things start to get tough, as Friday's do, think of it and allow it to ground you.
I love you all and IWNDWYT!! Have a strong day. You are strong!
PS: I have not stated the obvious here but, I am BEYOND thankful for all of you! Y'all have never met me but you’ve saved my life. That is some powerful shite!! Thank you!!
PSS: In recognition of Friday, here is a funky, punky “pick me up” song I’d like to share. It's my recent "go-to" song at the gym to get me movin'. Don't try to understand the words, just go with the flow!! 😊
PSSS: If you have 30 or more days sober and want to host the DCI, please reach out to u/sainthomer and let him know. If you haven’t hosted before, just know that it is beyond rewarding!!
