why are there so many discussions on whether hes good or bad

i think that james was a flawed, highly intricate and wonderful character. i don't understand why people try and make him out to be one thing or another. one of the many beautiful things about the story is that it's complicated. he loved her, yet he still did it, but one could argue it was out of mercy, but it wasn't his choice to make. why try and solve it all? i think that it is incredible just as is. trying to put it into a box just completely oversimplifies it. the glory of the story is that it's complex, it doesn't have to be explained.
