Does Frank actually have redeeming qualities?

(FIRST WATCH PART 1)

Hello everyone! After years of hearing about the show and seeing the odd YouTube short here and there, I’m finally watching Shameless for the first time. I’ve just finished S1e6 and I’ve gotta ask…

Does Frank actually have moments of being a good father to his family? The only real major spoilers I know of the show is the Steve/Jimmy situation and the fact that Frank dies in the last episode. But I have to ask, does he ever actually kind of redeem himself?

I don’t dislike watching him as a character in a show, but as a person, Frank is probably one of the worst people I’ve ever seen in my life, and I’m curious to see if there ever are actual points where he’s genuinely a good person, in particular towards his kids. And I mean a good person with no ulterior motive. He’s not doing it for money/to get drunk, get drugs, get himself out of trouble, but just genuinely showing good, caring love for his children?

I’m super excited to hear from anyone in this sub and eager to keep watching, so far I definitely am enjoying the show. TIA!
