Anyone else bummed that nothing seems to have come out of Oats Studios?

I don't know why they chose to make a movie like Demonic (I haven't seen, but terrible reviews), rather than expanding one of the shorts into a full-feature movie.

Rakka, Firebase, and Zygote all seemed like pretty good concepts that could have been expanded into full films. Especially Firebase, that could have been shot on a medium-sized budget and ruled.

Blomkamps career overall has been such a descent into nothing. He really should have capitalized on District 9 and gotten the budget to make a Halo movie and then maybe even good Alien movies. Instead we got Elysium (good enough) and Chappie (could have been good, but that Dutch rap duo is just cringe and they are not actors lol).

It's a real shame since Blomkamp seemed to have a really good eye for cyberpunkish design. Some of the design and action scenes in Elysium were top notch, and if the writing was just like, 25% better, it could have been a great film.

Kind of looking for opinions here: did Blomkamp shoot himself in the foot by trying to be radically different from the mainstream sci-fi scene, or did D9 get lucky?
