What Are Some Topics You Wish Were Covered More In R&B?

After listening to Rhythm Nation 1814 again today, it struck me that the decade it was released in (the 1980s) rarely ever showed a dark side to society in a way that a record like "Livin' In A World (They Didn't Make)" did and that Janet was one of the few and maybe the only R&B Artist of her era to cover topics like R@cism, gun violence, and education.

There's v few albums in the past ten years not named Lemonade or A Seat At The Table that cover topics with that much gravitas and weight, here's some things that R&B could make poignant again :

- Death & Grief. Songs like "Together Again" , "If I Ain't Got You" and "Ordinary People" are probably some of the greatest records about this topic in any genre.

- The African diaspora. "Jahraymecofasola" by Jill Scott, anyone?

- Insecurity. A record like "Should I Go" by Brandy is still one of the more

- Poverty. "When Am I Going To Make A Living" by Sade comes to mind.

- Motherhood. See "Lemonade" by Beyoncé"

- Addiction. "Smoking Cigarettes" by Tweet is one of the more humorous takes on this but as many R&B stars have fallen to overdoses and alcoholism one would think there'd be some records about it.
