Are people already forgetting about Luigi?
I hate that any action a person can do is, at best, valuable for a meme or a quick social media trend. Luigi did something incredibly brave and bold to send a message, yet people are too stupid to engage deeply. The principal reaction from the public is “omg he’s so hot! Anyway, what’s next on my TikTok feed” Most people aren’t taking anything away from this, no lessons are learned. Hawk Tuah girl may have had a bigger impact on society than Luigi.
We all know photo of the famous monk who self immolated in Saigon in 1963. His brave sacrifice put pressure on the South Vietnamese government, won world press photo of the year, and got the attention of JFK.
When someone self immolates in 2024 we make a few memes about it and forget the next day.
