Considering getting started.

Hello guys I'm new to the real estate thing. I am a 23 year old male who is currently debt free and making 80k a year. I live with my parents right now so I'm basically saving all my money as much as possible. I house don't wanna buy just for the sake of owning one. I'm doing it as long term investment that I can get back on. I currently have my VA HOME LOAN available to me. I want to know what's the best route to go abot this I've heard buying duplex would be a good idea and renting it out but I can't help but feel theres more to it.
