Why do many Indonesian scholars believe that ahlul kitab doesn't exist anymore

A little explanation is that many Indonesian scholars believe that the ahlul kitab that was mentioned in the Quran only exist at prophet S.A.W time and those jews and christian in this modern time aren't ahlul kitab anymore for some reason.Does anyone know why most of them believe this?
