Artist vs Team/Label
Does anybody ever wonder how much an artist is deciding something vs their team? Like sometimes I forget (which I know is the intent) that there is a whole group of people around them that decide they should go in this direction or that, and help them build the world of their album. Think about Doja Cat - I felt like Planet Her was probably very label/team driven, but maybe Scarlet wasn’t as much? Aside from a couple of songs like PTTR and Agora Hills, the album seemed like it was kind of a fuck you to the norms of the industry. I really don’t know.
Even Lil Nas X, I feel like his latest singles are underperforming, and he made it sound like this era was based on his own vision. But he has had massive hits the past few years.
Part of me would love to know more about how that stuff works in terms of creating an era and choosing a direction for their career/project, but the other part of me knows it would probably diminish some of the illusion and excitement around an artist.
