Curious about the South Hills

I’ve lived in Pittsburgh for about three years now. I grew up about an hour outside the city, so while it wasn’t far, Pittsburgh always felt like a bit of a mystery to me. Since moving here, I’ve noticed that a lot of people seem to dislike the South Hills. I’m not entirely sure where the South Hills starts and ends, but I honestly think areas like Dormont and Beechview are beautiful. I love how the neighborhoods are around the T infrastructure, the quirky brick architecture, and the weird ass hills and side streets remind me of where I grew up.

My main question is: as someone who didn’t grow up in Pittsburgh, why do so many people seem to dislike the South Hills? I have my own thoughts about Mount Lebanon, which in my experience can feel unwelcoming to people of color like myself. But I’m curious to hear other perspectives on this.

Edit: Thank you all so much for all of the helpful perspectives, it’s always so cool to hear from so many people about their experiences :)
