Hot Take/Discussion: Phish should stop playing Mexico in February and start playing winter tours again
Admittedly I have never been to Mexico, it seems like fun but also like an overpriced resort vacation that Phish just happens to be at.
I’m sure if I went I’d be going every year and singing the praises of the band for doing it, but maybe not. Relaxing and doing nothing on a beach and then seeing Phish at night just doesn’t seem like fun to me personally - better apart than together is my mindset/perspective on it.
You know what does sound fun?
January or February shows, maybe a short 6 or 8 show run across two or three cities where we gotta work through snow to get to show.
There is a vibe to winter shows where it's freezing cold outside and then you get inside warm up and have a blast! The work of dealing with the cold and ice is this epic payoff of a killer time, and then when you get all hot and sweaty the cool winter air just hits perfectly and you feel like you’re in heaven.
I went to Goosemas in Colorado in 2022 and it was killer because of that very thing - although not as much ice and just a lot of cold. I'm sure New Year's Eve in New York has that same vibe as well.
The Denver jam and bluegrass shows around this time frame I’m discussing always seem to really pop off hard to me, part of that could be bias because I’ve caught a lot of solid shows that time of year but I’d like to think it doesn’t weigh as heavy.
Am I crazy? Probably, but I think the band should shake it up in 2026 and have a winter tour like that.
It probably won’t happen because Rivera Maya is a big cash cow for them and the resort but a bit can dream.
What do you guys think? If they did it would you be excited yes or no and why?
