Removing a squirrel from the attic

Over the last month, I’ve been in a battle against an unseen pest in my attic. I thought it was mice at first.

We paid $250 to have an exterminator put poison and bait traps in my attic and crawlspace as well as to look for points of entry.

We continued to hear noises. Mostly at night, but also sometimes during the day.

I went into the attic again to look and heard noises in the far back corner of the house attic and found a squirrel. I scared it and it ran out a hole that they chewed thru the side of my house. We couldn’t see this home because it was under the drip line of the roof and above the gutters.

I called a wildlife removal company and they quoted me $1000-1500 to humanely remove the squirrel(s) and make all repairs. I did not go that route.

Somehow, I didn’t have any water damage. But I did have a hole to fix. I sealed the hole from the inside with some wood and spray foam. I also disposed of the insulation batt where the nest was. While I was up there sealing, I surveyed for other openings and found non, but I did find all the poison bags chewed open and a dead squirrel hidden under the insulation at the eave of the roof. After grabbing that dead squirrel, I cleaned everything as best as I could and was done inside.

With the hole sealed from the inside, I heard the squirrel chewing/scratching the repair from the outside the next day. I went to Home Depot and got some sheet metal and used liquid nails to adhere over the repair.

It’s been 5 days without scratching/chewing. Thank you for hearing my story. I hope this helps someone in the future. Attached are photos of the pest, damage, and repair.
