With the league being what it is where owners are seemingly always about instant results, is there any way Marvin Lewis lasts 15 years as head coach if he began his coaching career nowadays?
Marvin Lewis was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals for 15 years. He took them to the playoffs 7 times, didn't win a single playoff game. He has the record for most playoff losses for a coach without a single playoff victory. In his first 5 seasons as head coach, he took them to the playoffs only once, with 3 of the other seasons having a record of 8-8.
If Marvin Lewis started being a head coach nowadays or in the last couple years-- say he starts coaching at the same age he was back in 2003-- is there any way he lasts a decade and a half like he did with the same team?
I'm not saying wanting instant success is necessarily a good thing. Sometimes I feel like owners rush things instead of wait to see how things play out. On the flip side, I find it fascinating how it feels like some teams are okay with just being decent. In the Bengals case, three years after Marvin was gone they went to the Super Bowl and nearly won it.
Settling for mediocrity means you will never achieve greatness.
