Do the 49ers actually end up paying Purdy?
I think we can all reasonably conclude that Brock is in fact good. I want to get that out of the way because I know some of you are already rolling your eyes after reading the title.
However, there are a couple of factors here to keep in mind.
- Injuries
Brock has been hurt to some degree every year. UCL injury during their playoff run in 2023, A concussion and a neck injury the next season and a shoulder this year.
- The state of the roster
McCaffery might be done, Williams is not getting any younger and neither is Fred Warner. This team is loaded with big contracts for aging players and one has to wonder if adding a top of market QB contract makes sense.
- System
This point has been beaten to death so I won’t elaborate too much. But if your system creates an artificial floor for the QB and you need to reload from a roster standpoint, maybe you don’t want to pay now for that time.
- QB Availability
If Sam Darnold, Kirk Cousins or any other vet is available that could run this offense at a reasonably high level for 30m - 40m how does that look vs paying Brock 50m - 60m?
So, with those factors in mind. Do you think Brock gets paid? If not, does he play out 2025? Do they franchise tag him? Trade him? Just curious on how this is all going to play out.
