Horrified by my baby spitting up..

I laid my boy down after awhile of sort of sitting up, my mom fed him and had him positioned weird but I let it go cause she raised two kids and I didn’t want to be overbearing. I heard a awful gagging and he was trying to spit up milk, it was pooled in his mouth and coming out of his nose, I immediately grabbed him and began to start clearing it, you could tell he was struggling to cry through the milk and was trying red in the face. I use my nose suction system and flipped him over and gave him back pats, the whole thing lasted probably two minutes but it was terrifying. He seems OK now he took a nap and had another bottle and seems OK but I’m not OK. Has anyone else experienced this and what was the outcome? Does this happen often to babies or do I need to contact my pediatrician?
