Is it trauma!?

I'm visiting my uncle and I've notice that whenever he comes back from work his kids (my cousins) leave the sitting room and go elsewhere in the house, simply, they cant be in the same room. They are quite older 17-22 age bracket. Is it that they are scared of their dad or what. I've observed the same thing in my friends house too.
