Pasek and Paul's lyrics suck
I've finally gotten around to watching 'Dear Evan Hansen', and in addition to the story being terrible and exploitative, I can't get over how bad the lyrics are. Every song barring the actually interesting 'Sincerely, Me' is the exact same tone and message. The lyrics sound like bad indie pop songs written by inexperienced teenagers. I don't understand how they got successful.
The most irritating flaw is that any time they write a line they think is profound, they proceed to repeat it endlessly – 'When you've fallen in a forest and there's nobody around, did you ever really crash or even make a sound' isn't the chorus of the song, they just couldn't be bothered to write other lyrics which fit. Did they think nobody would notice?
