Doubt (2008), not often talked about
I know this movie garnered acting Oscar noms, but I rarely hear anyone talk about it or reference it when it comes to citing magnificent performances.
But damn, is it exquisite, especially in its dual (duel?) leads. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep are obviously incredible in their loud and quiet moments, but the strength in their acting here is somehow being able to cultivate sympathy for characters who, in lesser hands, would be so revolting and easily dismissed. Both leads trade blows through incredibly taut dialogue and they create a sense of tension that ratchets up in each exchange they have. It's beautiful to see them both at the height of their prowess.
But, let us also not forget Viola Davis who blows the roof off in her one scene. She's just as good as the leads.
I feel like audiences might not have connected with this one due to its murky nature and not giving out easy answers, especially with the ending, but the film is really something to behold.
And goddamn do I miss PSH.
