Hereditary (2018) was a complete let down to me

Just watched Hereditary (2018) for the first time and felt kinda let down by it

I’d heard raving reviews about Hereditary and quite like Toni Colette so I watched it and I didn’t really enjoy it.

I kinda felt let down by the pacing for the first hour and a half where it was the slow buildup then it all happened quite fast but a lot of things felt like they weren’t explained enough to me.

Why exactly was there a strained relationship between Peter and his mum before he killed Charlie? Peter was fully to blame for killing Charlie yet it was kinda brushed over before the mother mentioned it at the dinner table.

Also regarding Charlie why did she make clicking noises and why did she randomly cut off a pigeon’s head

Also the whole cult thing? I felt like I tried to understand that the grandmother and Joan were part of some weird cult thing trying to bring back Paimon but that again it was all rushed towards the end of the movie. Also I know the demon took over the mother and cut her own head off but like why? I understand that after the mother did the seance they were presumably being haunted, the son especially but beyond that, the whole demon thing makes 0 sense to me.

Also the sleepwalking angle? Wtf is that about? It makes no sense.

I felt like in my opinion there was a good story on paper but the execution at points made no sense. Maybe I didn’t really get it so maybe someone could better explain it to me.
