Low tech boiling

Been making syrup for about 7 years. Does anyone else simply eye it? No brix measurement or hydrometer readings. I base everything off the 40:1 ratio and then carefully watch the final moments as the bubbles change size and the motion of the boil changes as it rises in the pot. I grab a teaspoon of the liquid, freeze it for 30 seconds and see how it rolls off the back of my hand when dripped.

Anyone else old school it?
