Finished the show. Season 6 review and overall thoughts.
Hi, once again. I'm glad to say I finished the show after a couple of months. It was amazing, it undoubtedly is among my top 10 series of all time. This post is going to be loooong, so bear with me. Here are my thoughts on season 6 (previous seasons on my profile) and on the series overall.
THOUGHTS ON SEASON 6:
- This might be the weakest season. Although there's no bad episodes, there were some that were just meh.
- It was in this season that I finally realized that I was never going to see Locke again. He died in a horrible way, and his final words being: "I don't understand" is bone chilling, really. He was a pain in the ass sometimes, but man I felt bad for him.
- I'm glad Juliet didn't immediately die from the explosion. She got to say goodbye to Sawyer (more on that later) and died in her arms. Her character deserved a proper send off, since she's been with us for a while. I absolutely loved her and missed her this season.
- I liked the alternate reality they showed (I know that it isn't an alternate reality, but that's what I thought at the moment) and how the characters meet once again for the first time. Also, seeing all the changes from the reality we know well was fun and engaging.
- I wasn't a fan of the temple episodes. It was a cool location with excellent set design, but there wasn't much more than that.
- Claire is back and more unhinged than ever! She was absent for the entirety of season 5, but I knew we weren't done with her. It was crazy seeing how much she'd changed. It's logical though, after being alone for three years, with only Smocke as company.
- Sayid turned into an absolute menace. He feels nothing and does everything Smocke tells him too. I'm sad he didn't return to normal for the whole season. I missed him a lot: even though he was there, who he really was, was lost.
- I really appreciate Kate's effort to rescue Claire. After doing nothing during season 5 (not her fault), she did her best this season. She is flawed, but a good friend.
- I can't believe we got an episode centered on Richard. He's from the 1800s??? Are you freaking kidding me. And he's the one that came in the Black Rock! There's two mysteries solved at once: the boat and who the hell Richard (Ricardus) Alpert truly is. He's been enshrouded in mystery ever since he appeared, so it was really cool to finally see what his story was.
- Desmond is back!!! He wasn't around for season 5 that much, and neither for the first half of this season. I cheered when it was revealed he returned! And he gave us such a great episode, I loved seeing how he realizes he's on an alternate reality or something like that, and embarks on a mission to find everyone from Oceanic 815.
- Ilana... I truly thought you were going to have a bigger role. Instead, she just explodes after stupidly treating the dynamite like it were candy. She got Arzt'd.
- I can't believe three main characters died at the same time. When Sayid ran away with the bomb I stood there with my mouth agape. I couldn't process what was happening. However, I think there wasn't any way on Earth that Sayid left the island alive. There were building up his death all season. He died a hero. Now, Sun and Jin was a low blow. I watched in disbelief as they drowned. It was so cruel, Jin never even got to meet his daughter. And the fact that Jack promised Sun he was going to get her and Jin off the island depresses me. My only consolation is that they died in each other's arms. I have to admit, I can't help but partially blame Sawyer for what happened... I'm not like Jack lmao.
- Jacob's episode explained so many things, but at the same time didn't? Haha. I feel like the episode could have been placed sooner. The concept of the light introduced could've been expanded upon on later episodes instead of jumping right into it in the finale. Now, Jacob's "mom" and brother are the corpses that they find in season 1???? And the stones are from the board game! I completely forgot about the stones to be honest, but I never forgot the skeletons! I wonder if the writers had that planned since the beginning...
- Throughout the season we saw characters return in this "alternate reality" and it really helped me to find closure. I am not kidding when I tell you that seeing Rousseau so happy almost got me. I felt so bad when she died, considering she was alone for 16 years and when she reunited with her daughter, they both die shortly after. It was a nice ending for Rousseau and Alex: they're happy in that reality, at least.
- I knew Jack would take Jacob's role. Sayid did tell him "it was always going to be you, Jack". And Jack is the only one who would volunteer for the role. His character did a 180º but it never felt rushed or anything, it was proper character development.
- I don't quite understand why Ben killed Widmore. He said "he doesn't get to save his daughter", but when Ben had the chance, he spared Penny's life. I guess he didn't want to do it himself? It's the only logical explanation I can find.
- I thought Alpert was dead the second that Smocke threw him to a tree. I was like "that's it?? he's dead?? A whole episode for him to die just like that?" I'm glad that wasn't the case haha!
THOUGHTS ON THE FINALE:
- I was aware before starting the show that the finale was controversial. Now that I was about to watch it I was kinda scared. I hoped that it provided a satisfying conclusion, at least. But it was so much more than that for me. I absolutely adored the ending.
- I love when characters that have been in the show return for the ending. It warms my heart seeing them reunited, thinking how much they have been through. Also, trying to guess what would trigger the characters' memories was so much fun, and it made so much sense for each single one of them.
- I thought Ben was going to be more of a threat since he said he was ready to kill people. I guess he was lying so Smocke wouldn't kill him.
- Lapidus is alive!!! Yay!! I for sure thought he was a goner when the sub exploded. BUT they never showed his death. How lucky that the pilot survived so that they could escape the island ;)
- I knew Desmond couldn't be dead when he turned off the light. He just couldn't. I'd RIOT if that was the case haha.
- Why didn't Smocke just kill Jack when he had the chance? It was just one more stab... But hey, the island was falling apart. He commited the same mistake almost every villain does haha.
- How did Ben get out of the tree that was on top of him? I thought he was going to die there but in the next scene he's just... free. That was my only real issue with the finale.
- Hurley sticking with Jack until the end is so wholesome. Their friendship is one of the show's best.
- I NEVER would've guessed the group that finally leaves the island. Sawyer and Kate were obvious choices, but then Lapidus, Miles, Claire and Alpert?? Who would've thought THEY were going to be the ones that escape? I loved that, it was unpredictable. I'm so glad Claire made it out, too. Give the girl a break.
- Jack leaving Hurley in charge of the island made sense. Hurley is always protecting others, so it's only logical he'd protect the island if it meant the well being of everyone else. And Ben staying with him as his right hand, after Jacob never even revealed himself to Ben, is full circle. Also, Ben had nothing to return to, and it now reminds me of how he said in one episode he's going back to Locke because he's "the only one who'd have me". Now Hurley wants him by his side. God, the writers really thought of everything huh. It's brilliant.
- I was moved by seeing Sun, Jin, Locke, Juliet, Libby and Charlie again, alive and happy. I cried when Kate, Claire and Charlie got back their memories. Such a beautiful scene. Also, when Sun and Jin remember because of the sonogram Juliet does... oh Dear Lord I'm going to cry AGAIN.
- Seeing Juliet and Jack as a divorced couple but still getting along healed my heart. I loved them together. Am I the only one who wasn't a fan of Juliet with Sawyer? They had a beautiful scene in the finale and when Juliet died, but I never was too fond of them since most of their 3 year relationship was off-screen. And when we see them together, Kate arrives and causes tension between them. Maybe I'll like them more on a rewatch.
- Locke and Jack being friends in this reality was EVERYTHING. Their interactions were heart warming, and it reminded me of Locke from season 1-2 when he was my favorite character. Besides, Jack telling Smocke he's disrespecting Locke's memory by wearing his face shows how he's learned to respect Locke and understand he was right all along, even if his methods weren't the most adequate.
- No mention nor appearance of Mr. Eko :( I liked him!
- I realized that where they were was some sort of Limbo (in my opinion!) when Hurley told Ben that he was a good right hand. Jack realizing he's dead and finally getting the chance to talk with his father was so cathartic. Jack's actor is remarkable.
- Ben staying behind to stay with Rousseau and Alex was so good. Excellent character development. I feel like he'll stay with them to redeem himself for stealing Alex and later indirectly causing her death.
- The scene at the church, everyone smiling, dancing, and finally ready to move on to the afterlife/heaven is so symbolic. It's all about leaving past regrets behind you, embrace the mistakes you made and moving on to the next chapter. And Jack closing his eyes in the same place where he opened them in the very first scene of the show... Jesus Christ I'm about to tear up.
- It was such a gorgeous ending. I do not understand the hate. A powerful message, emotive scenes, top notch acting, wholesome interactions, beautiful music (listening to Landing party as I write this) is everything I look for in a tv show. LOST had all of that, and more.
OVERALL THOUGHTS:
- This is my ranking of the seasons: 3 > 4 > 5 > 2 > 1 > 6. I loved the episodes where Sawyer and Kate are in the cages (I think those aren't liked very much)
- Worst episode was Stranger in a Strange Land, by far. Best episode has to be the finale. If not counting finales, I loved "The Constant" or "I Do". As a standalone, Exposé was great.
- My favorite characters, after finishing the show, are Jack, Juliet, Sayid, Desmond, Ben and Hurley, but I became to like every single one of them to some extent. I didn't hate anybody, except those who are meant to be hated, of course.
- Penny and Desmond take the prize for cutest couple. I looooove them. Sun and Jin as a close second.
- Scenes that made me emotional: the entirety of the finale, Sawyer and Jack talking about Jack's dad in s1, Juliet's death, Penny and Desmond's phone call.
- Most shocking moments: Michael shooting Libby, Kate adopting Aaron in the future, or when the flashbacks are revealed to be actually flashforwards.
- Sayid might be the smartest character, really. There wasn't any time I recall him doing dumb decisions. I love him.
- There were some characters that I didn't understand why they were there. Caesar and Ilana, for example. Rose and Bernard... don't kill me haha
- Whatever happened to Michael? Is he becoming one of the whispers they hear on the island? Or because Hurley kind of forgave him, he'll be able to move on? And why was Walt so special?
- It's an awesome show, although not for everyone. It requires a lot of attention or it's easy to get lost (pun intended). Time travel was handled really well, the pieces fit together without any weird discrepancies, so props to the writers for thinking everything through!
- The finale doesn't deserve the bad rep it has, not even one bit. Might be one of my favorite finales ever, to be quite honest.
Thanks for reading. It's been an awesome journey and I'm officially joining this subreddit, now that I can read all kinds of spoilers haha. I'm super curious: what is the general consensus on the characters, seasons, storylines? Are my opinions unpopular, or do most people think like me? I'm eager to hear what y'all think!
Cheers Losties! :D
