What the bleep is Rage?

The episode Rage from The New Beginning was on 2 nights ago and it scarred my wife and me. What the heck! WHO approved the plot of a gambler shooting his family in front of a boy, then losing his mind and busing in on Laura seeing her as his shot wife and insinuating that Laura’s daughter had an out of wedlock child? Wtf? Was this the jumping the shark episode or what???
