Law for recently separated cohabiting couple
Hi so I’m looking for some advice. I know I will need to speak to a legal advisor so while I’m waiting for someone to get back to me with an appointment, I thought I’d ask here.
My situation: my partner and I separated several months ago after 12 years together. We were living abroad first and then in Ireland lived for nearly 6 years with an 18 month break in between due to him need and waiting for a work visa in ireland.
I bought a house nearly 6 years ago which we have both been living in with our 10 year old son. The house is in my name and paid for with my money from the sale of a house I Co owned with my brother. When we moved in, the house needed some work so my partner took out a loan to be paid over 5 years. Because I only worked part time in order to take care of our son, I wasn’t eligible for a loan but we agreed that while he paid back the loan, I covered the costs of the bills in the house , the food and everything for my son such as clothing etc. He didn’t have to pay for anything except the loan.
What I’m wondering is does my ex have any rights over the house? Especially if I ask him to move out? His name is not on the deeds. He cleared the loan but I am still covering the bulk of bills. I don’t charge him rent. It’s an amicable split and for the sake of son, I don’t mind my ex being there for another while but I’m concerned that the longer he’s living here, the more rights he’ll have over the house. It’s the only thing i have that’s worth anything and I can leave to my son after I’m gone. TIA
