Moving over from mech eng?

I’m 27 with a masters degree in mechanical engineering but I’ve come to the realisation that I’m way more interested in programming and computer science.

I’ve been trying to teach myself from online courses. I’ve learnt python. I’ve learnt c++. I’m now doing a data structures and algorithms course with c++.

My job is adjacent to this. I use pandas and numpy a lot of numerical analysis. I’m an open source software user too. But I want to move over to the development of it. Even if it’s a separate industry.

But this is very hard and I have big moments of doubt. I’m 27. Wouldn’t they just hire a fresh grad? Or someone with a degree in computer science?

Am i in a good or bad position to do this?
