How do I learn discrete math?

Every discrete math problem I encounter seems impossible, and when I look at the solution, it begins with "First, we'll construct a function/relation..", which is usually extremely complicated. How do I learn the specific functions to formulate? I know how to solve each problem once I see the function, but don't know how to originate it. Any books, resources, or tips will be massively helpful.
