Can someone explain what the NFR era was like to a new Lana fan?

I just started listening to Lana this year because of Ocean Blvd. As I was going through her entire discography, I’m shocked that I never caught wind of her during NFR. Now I’m really curious what that time was like, who was she in the same conversation as, etc…
