Visiting from California, I'm flabbergasted by how inexpensive good haircuts are here
I'm the type of Californian Asian (non-Korean) dude that mainly goes to Korean joints either in LA K-town or Buena Park K-town to get my haircuts, and those places charge an arm and a leg for a nice haircut... anywhere from $50-60 for a good haircut, and that's without tip. Granted, yes, I can go to some smaller place that charges $20-$30 but believe me when I say that I've gotten enough haircuts in my thirty years of living to say that you really do get what you pay for, at least in southern California. Anyways I'm here in Korea for the first time, Gwangju to be specific, and I just got a killer haircut for just $8! I'm absolutely shocked. The amount of care the stylist put in with the wash and everything easily would have warranted the $50 price tag his Californian counterparts charge, but he just charged $8. I was told by my GF (Korean) that I shouldn't tip as it's not a thing here but every ounce of my being wanted to give him a fat tip.
Maybe my entire world-view has been warped by living in high-cost-of-living southern California, but I sincerely hope that hair stylists aren't struggling to make a living here.
And for anyone curious the place could be found here (sorry it's just a google link).
