Descale mode

Does anyone know if there is something different going on in the machine when the descale light is on? I suspect there is a sensor for scale buildup that turns the light on. But is the machine doing something different? Or does the machine just force you to run it until it no longer detects scale pn that sensor?

Any consumer product engineers out there?
