I'm in a apartment what is the difference between air filter

I been to the store and got the red ones like my parents but it's way colder now. they give free ones but there ass at filtering air. There just brown card board and a bit of fiber. But what is so special about the other kinds of filter type and could they make my filter better but still be doing it job
