Epik 2024 reviews thread
I’ve been wanting to go to an Epik for ages but it’s always a hectic time of year. On the train back home and time to share some thoughts and hear yours.
- Logistics I feel went super smoothly, as seems to be the case with HSU events lately. I got to Sydney Olympic Park at around 5pm and just breezed through the security lines. Didn’t seem to be any police dogs at the entrance.
- Layout of the festival was good. Plenty of bleachers for people to catch some respite, and I loved the huge fans they had tucked between certain bleachers; they should do more of those.
- Sound quality was excellent in all areas where I parked up during the event. Was preparing myself for the deafeningly loud laser ceremonies as has happened at past events but they were nicely balanced.
- Stage was eh. I wish HSU would step their creativity up with more physical elements. Also were they re-using the visual asset from Midnight Mafia with the ball thing?
- Lighting I thought was really good. My favourite moment was probably “The Theme” during the first laser ceremony.
- My favourite sets were DBSTF (by a long shot), Audiofreq and Rebelion classics (lots of tribute tracks for E-Force but hopefully Edje is back for Midnight Mafia next year). Sorry not sorry but Toza’s set I hated; to me it’s everything that’s bad about new raw rolled into one, but props for those who like it.
- Unfortunately, I saw three medical incidents during the event. There were probably more. I don’t know if there’s bad drugs going around or if it’s the heat inside (it wasn’t as hot as last year though). I think HSU should explore what other ways it has to keep people cool during the event when they are right in the middle of the dancefloor. For example, in NL there are people who roam selling icy poles and cold drinks - I don’t know why they don’t tap into that. Slightly more ambitious is putting large ceiling fan fixtures or something to blast the crowd all night.
What’s your thoughts?
