Somewhat Hot Take: There Are Far Too Few Official Levels

The lifeblood of GD is community made levels, and I’d never change that. I just was thinking, from a new players perspective, how jarring the games progression is level by level.

The first 8 or so introduce maybe a new feature per level, yellow orbs or pads, gravity changes, you get it. Then you get to later levels like Cycles and ToE that introduce new game modes, and again it’s done one level at a time. It’s not overwhelming. But something changed when 2.1 released; new levels started to appear less and less frequently due to longer updates, meaning more is crammed into each new official level.

Fingerdash is a great example, introducing the spider, red and black orbs, dash orbs, and a ton more. Dash is even worse in this regard with so many 2.2 features it’s hard to even describe. It’s also lead to certain game modes like the robot or the spider being in nearly no official levels.

I understand why this is the way it is, with RobTop taking years to make massive updates and dropping levels as showcases of features, but I just think the game could really benefit from some more levels to slowly introduce new mechanics instead of overwhelming players all at once. Just my take.
