Awful bottle of Campari

I bought a bottle of Campari (from a BWS in the inner west) yesterday and it was absolutely awful - thick, syrupy, sweet, with no hint of the grassy flavour that I love most about Campari. There was nothing on the bottle to suggest that it was somehow different, although the bottle itself was unusual - ribbed in the lower part of the front side. I remember when they wanted to make Amaro Lucano a national, then international brand, they sweetened it dramatically and changed the flavours, but Campari has been an international brand for 100 years, so why mess around with it. Anyone know what's going on?
