Realizing the risks of flying as a student pilot

I'm currently a student pilot with about 45 hours at a part 141 program with my checkride in just a few hours.

It hit me recently after reading about some accidents and up until now I haven't really considered the fact that I could actually die pursuing this career path. I love flying, it's awesome, but I'm kind of scared now knowing that a simple mistake at low altitude or even engine failure that's not my fault could get me killed so easily.

I'm very careful with safety and things like preflights, checklists, emergency procedures, and reading and learning about common causes of accidents in order to avoid them. But the risk is still there regardless of how much preparation you do.

How do you guys cope with the sobering reality that any flight could be your last?
