Chop wood, carry water (before and after enlightenment)

I see reference to this saying by many people, and let's get something clear.

This saying is along a Zen koan and spoken by a master monk. Monks live simple life ALREADY, freed from attachment, consumption, competition. Whether before or after enlightenment, their way of living wouldn't change much because they're already living a simple transcendent life, following the Eight Fold Path, stilling their mind, cleansing their ego and baggage. The inner finally match the outer precepts.

When I see a random person online quote this saying, I wonder if they mean:

1) no behaviors or lifestyles change need to occur (regardless if they're a highly attached, cutthroat competitive, maximal consumption person) - which is very different from the Eight Fold Path. If you're living life like a selfish and exploitative a-hole that harm others, achieving enlightenment of Oneness and compassion should definitely change your ways...OR

2) they're already monk-like and already living a simple life, which is a fair point, but how does the person making this reference know about the lifestyle of the random online stranger they're talking to?

This is a problem with the enlightenment, non-dual community. There are A LOT parroting of "wisdom" without clear understanding of the nuances.
