[Discussion] Is it worth importing a dog from Europe because of "better health"?

From German Shepherds to Rottweilers and Doberman Pinchers, I have always been told by local dog club members that I should spend the extra $1000 or $2000 importing a dog from Europe because they have higher breeding standards vs the USA, so dogs from there have fewer health issues and better temperaments. Anyone have experience with this or thoughts on it?
