Random Upgrades

Will someone please explain how random C+ upgrades work? I’m but a lowly SkyMiles member (not even silver) and got randomly upgraded to C+ on my flight from DTW - HSV a few days ago. No complaints but really confused since I thought that random upgrades were a thing of the past for people who aren’t in Ed’s inner circle
