Evacuating with bags. Never okay, right?

I noticed in the video of the plane evacuation at ATL that some folks had bags with them. My friend and I got into an argument over whether it’s okay to take any belongings with you. I said absolutely not. They said they’d leave with their backpack. I said I hope you get banned if you do that.

What was the appropriate protocol for this evacuation? Shouldn’t you leave everything behind as a general rule? Can you take your purse or a small bag? I know some folks have meds that they can’t be without.
