I have a question about how Shinigamis die

First of all does there have to be intent because I’m pretty sure that they kill people mainly to stay alive because they get the life span of them so I’d assume they would of killed at least a few assassins of other people. Secondly does it effect a death note user that’s human, like if a human was to use it to save someone would they die
